In Paris this Tuesday, headlining the penultimate day of Paris Fashion Week ready-to-wear, Karl Lagerfeld sent his models down the runway in his new Spring Summer collection. There was a noticable difference to the usual collections, with a hint towards the building (powered by renewable energy) that the catwalk was set in.
We have all heard of ethical fashion, using biodegradable fabrics, fairtrade etc. This was ethics with a difference, making the fashion forward sit up and think about the issue surrounding renewable energy. The Grand Palais was fitted with a solar panelled runway and wind turbines, in a bid to prove the fashion industry can make a stand too.
"Energy is the most important thing in life," said the designer backstage, enthusing about the "beauty" of wind turbines. "If I had a house, I would put them in my garden."
The whole collection showed hints towards a strong influence from the subject of renewable energy, with some of the dresses using sequins patterned in the same way as the solar panelled catwalk, and hats that mirrored the spinning of wind turbines.
A futuristic and successful collection with a strong and important message, fashionistas take note: renewable energy, recommended to you by Karl Lagerfeld.
